Docents
Becoming A Docent
Are you a retired teacher, an under-employed art aficionado or just a very friendly and enthusiastic person? Share your love of art and learning by becoming a docent at the Akron Art Museum! Docenting offers an extraordinary experience for people who love art, working with others and continually challenging their minds through learning.
Docents are specially trained volunteers who guide groups of adults and children on tours through the museum. It’s the docent’s job to encourage discussion and provide information about the museum and the artwork on view.
This spring, the Akron Art Museum will offer a five session, condensed Thursday evening class called Docent Essentials. The course will get you acquainted with the museum’s tour program, and attendees who complete the sessions will graduate ready to give museum highlights and summer day camp tours. Session topics include Meaningful Museum Experiences, Visual Literacy and Critical Thinking, Art and Architecture Basics and Mod Squad: Looking at Modern and Contemporary Art.
The kick-off event for new and potential docents will take place on Thursday, May 6 at 6:30 pm in the museum lobby. It will feature a short presentation, mixing and mingling with current docents and a free museum tour. Parking is free after 6 pm in the city garage at High Street and E. Market Street. Please RSVP to 300.376.9186 x230 or aCaplan@AkronArtMuseum.org.
More detailed information on becoming a docent can be obtained from contacting the education department at 330.376.9186 x229 or x230.
