Detroit Disassembled: Photographs by Andrew Moore

On View through October 10, 2010

Andrew Moore’s photographs of the Motor City are sublime—beautiful, operatic in scale and drama, tragic yet offering a glimmer of hope. They are the subject of Detroit Disassembled, an exhibition organized by the Akron Art Museum making its debut here before touring nationally. Featuring 30 photographs taken between 2008 and 2009, the exhibition showcases numerous structures from ornate public buildings to humble homes.

What people are saying:

"Moore brings passion and visual eloquence to his task, along with a keen eye for the rich and complex textures of decay...With strong projects such as the Moore exhibition, the Akron Art Museum is demonstrating a desire to animate its new galleries with shows that justify a significant community investment. It is, quite simply, a knockout."
- Steve Litt, Cleveland Plain Dealer

"I was blown away by what I saw. The photographs in the exhibition are so beautiful and evocative that, well, really, words fail me."
- Anne Mancine Blog

"From first to last, Moore's images are heartbreaking, gut-wrenching and thought-provoking, but they are also gorgeous."
- Dottie Shinn, Akron Beacon Journal

This exhibition is organized by the Akron Art Museum and made possible by a major gift from Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell with additional support from the John A. McAlonan Fund of Akron Community Foundation. The accompanying publication is underwritten by Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell with additional funding from the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation.

Related Film Screening: "Grown in Detroit"
Sunday, August 1, 2 pm

"Grown in Detroit" spotlights the urban gardening efforts managed by the pregnant and parenting students of the Catherine Ferguson Academy of Detroit. Although many of the students start out disliking the often physically demanding work on the farm, this aversion disappears as they see their crops growing and being sold for profit.

This screening is free and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis in the Charles and Jane Lehner Auditorium. For more information call 330.376.9186 x230.

Exhibition Catalogue

Accompanying the exhibition is a large format 128-page hardcover book, "Detroit Disassembled," co-published by the Akron Art Museum and Damiani Editore (Italy). In addition to 74 luscious full-page and double-spread plates, the volume contains an artist's statement and an essay by Philip Levine, a Detroit native and winner of a Pulitzer Prize, a National Book Critics Circle Award and two National Book Awards. Arctic Re-visions: Isaac Julien's True North

On View through October 3, 2010

Isaac Julien's audio-visual installation True North (2004) is a journey into the beautiful yet terrifying midst of a sublime continent.

Unfolding on three screens that span nearly 40 feet, the mesmerizing installation transports viewers through a bleak yet majestic arctic landscape, which has seduced scientists, explorers, writers and visual artists since the 19th century. True North is loosely inspired by the story of Matthew Henson (1866 - 1955), the black American explorer who accompanied Robert Peary and was among the first people to reach the North Pole in 1909. The video's narration is taken from a shocking interview in which Henson claimed that he had reached the Pole before Peary.

The exhibition marks the Midwest debut of this important work from the museum's collection.

This exhibition is organized by the Akron Art Museum and made possible by support from the Gay Community Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation, The Burton D. Morgan Foundation, the Harris Stanton Gallery and The Welty Family Foundation.
