landscapes? How do artists capture the sensations we experience during
extreme weather? For answers to these questions and more, explore

On June 17, award-winning choreographer and director Doug Varone and company will give a free, public presentation of their Exploring Repertory
series at the Akron Art Museum. The presentation will feature a
breakdown of Varone's 2006 New York Dance and Performance Award winning
"Boats Leaving," with music by Arvo Part. "Boats Leaving," which was
created around scores of photos from the New York Times, will be
performed in its entirety before being broken down into individual
moments to be examined alongside their photographic inspirations.
To further illustrate the process of creating movement based on
imagery, Varone will create dance responses to art work from the
museum's collection before closing with an audience question and answer
session. The program is free and seating is available on a first-come,
first-served basis.
Savor fair trade coffees, fresh

Detroit Disassembled: Photographs by Andrew Moore
On View June 5 - October 10, 2010
Andrew Moore’s photographs of the Motor City are sublime—beautiful,
operatic in scale and drama, tragic yet offering a glimmer of hope. They
are the subject of Detroit Disassembled, an exhibition organized by the Akron Art Museum making its debut here before touring nationally.
Featuring 30 photographs taken between 2008 and 2009, the exhibition
showcases numerous structures from ornate public buildings to humble
homes. It is hard to believe that the post-apocalyptic scenes reflect
present-day America, but Moore has been scrupulously honest. Detroit,
once the epitome of our nation’s industrial wealth and might, has been
in decline for almost a half-century. The city is now one-third empty
land—more abandoned property than any American city except post-Katrina
New Orleans.
This exhibition is organized by the Akron Art Museum and made
possible by a major gift from Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell with
additional support from the John A. McAlonan Fund of Akron Community
Foundation. The accompanying publication is underwritten by Fred and
Laura Ruth Bidwell with additional funding from the Elizabeth Firestone
Graham Foundation.

On View June 5 - October 3, 2010
Isaac Julien's audio-visual installation True North (2004) is a journey into the beautiful yet terrifying midst of a sublime continent.
Unfolding on three screens that span nearly 40 feet, the mesmerizing
installation transports viewers through a bleak yet majestic arctic
landscape, which has seduced scientists, explorers, writers and visual
artists since the 19th century. True North is loosely inspired by
the story of Matthew Henson (1866 - 1955), the black American explorer
who accompanied Robert Peary and was among the first people to reach the
North Pole in 1909. The video's narration is taken from a shocking
interview in which Henson claimed that he had reached the Pole before
Peary.
The exhibition marks the Midwest debut of this important work from the museum's collection.
This exhibition is organized by the Akron Art Museum and made
possible by support from the Gay Community Endowment Fund of Akron
Community Foundation, The Burton D. Morgan Foundation, the Harris
Stanton Gallery and The Welty Family Foundation.
