Community members, educators, and students are invited to Can you hear me?, the 2017 Leading for Social Justice Exhibit

Reception with artists and Fairlawn School of Music: 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

About Leading for Social Justice Exhibits
Christa Boske, Associate Professor of PreK-12 Educational Administration, recently curated exhibits at both the Akron Art Museum in December and at the Cleveland Museum of Art in January. Collaborators on the exhibits included Kent State University graduate students enrolled in Boske’s EDAD 6/76529 Leading for Social Justice course. The Building Bridges, Not Walls exhibits explored the intersections of race/ethnicity, sexuality, class, immigration, gender, learning differences, gentrification, native language, geographic location, immigration, unconstitutional school funding, and other social justice issues facing K-12 schools in the United States through artmaking.

Since 2010, the Leading for Social Justice Art Exhibits have captivated audiences with their thought-provoking artmaking, reaching thousands of attendees for these one-night events. The purpose of the artmaking is to promote meaningful social change in P-12 school communities by bringing together a myriad of artists ranging from children, educators, community organizations, and community artist mentors to address prevailing struggles and inequities facing P-12 U.S. public schools. The exhibits continue to be the only communal art exhibits of their kind, which include authentic collaborations among aspiring school leaders, teachers, P-12 children, nonprofit organizations, and community artists.

Shake, Shine and Splatter!

Best for ages 3+ and their grown-ups (siblings welcome)

Join the movement! Children are naturally inclined (and designed) to be active learners. Whether moving during imaginary play, exploring new concepts, or responding to what one sees, the body teaches the brain to think. Art Moves replaces traditional sitting-and-looking exercises with engaging-and-interpreting, encouraging children to express themselves through kinesthetic experiences in the galleries. In collaboration with the Cleveland-based dance company, The Movement Project, a professional dance instructor and museum educator embrace a whole-body approach to focused looking and process-based art making. Please wear comfortable clothing for bending and stretching.

Free for members. $10/non-member child. Space is limited.

Image: William Sommer, (Detroit, Michigan, 1867 - 1949, Northfield Center, Ohio), Bach Chord, 1923, oil on composition board, 20 x 23 3/4 in. Collection of the Akron Art Museum, Gift of Russell Munn in memory of Helen G. Munn

About Bach Chord
The title of this work and the musical-note-shaped foliage on the tree to the left allude to Sommer’s interest in a turn-of-the-twentieth-century idea called synaesthesia. This concept proposed parallels between the senses so that, for example, certain colors or shapes might suggest certain sounds. Sommer said that when he listened to Bach’s music, he could “see in color the various movements of the music.” Just as a chord is composed of multiple notes, Sommer painted the houses in this landscape in an array of colors that he highlighted by framing the structures with areas of white snow.
