About Leading for Social Justice Exhibits
Christa Boske, Associate Professor of PreK-12 Educational Administration, recently curated exhibits at both the Akron Art Museum in December and at the Cleveland Museum of Art in January. Collaborators on the exhibits included Kent State University graduate students enrolled in Boske’s EDAD 6/76529 Leading for Social Justice course. The Building Bridges, Not Walls exhibits explored the intersections of race/ethnicity, sexuality, class, immigration, gender, learning differences, gentrification, native language, geographic location, immigration, unconstitutional school funding, and other social justice issues facing K-12 schools in the United States through artmaking.

Since 2010, the Leading for Social Justice Art Exhibits have captivated audiences with their thought-provoking artmaking, reaching thousands of attendees for these one-night events. The purpose of the artmaking is to promote meaningful social change in P-12 school communities by bringing together a myriad of artists ranging from children, educators, community organizations, and community artist mentors to address prevailing struggles and inequities facing P-12 U.S. public schools. The exhibits continue to be the only communal art exhibits of their kind, which include authentic collaborations among aspiring school leaders, teachers, P-12 children, nonprofit organizations, and community artists.
