Four local and regional artists with artwork featured in the Curated Storefront project in downtown Akron, including Akron Soul Train artist fellows, will each give short artist talks about their work and artistic process. The talks will conclude in a panel Q&A with all of the artists. Artist talks will be from Stephen Tomasko and Gabe Gott from AKron Soul Train, and those from Curated Storefront will be announced soon!

Stephen Tomasko is represented in public and private collections, both nationally and internationally, including the permanent collection of the Akron Art Museum. His work has been exhibited widely in regional group exhibitions and the subject of solo gallery exhibitions in Los Angeles, Australia, and France. Since the mid-1980s, Tomasko has made images of America, including bodies of photographs with diverse subjects ranging from jubilant celebrations of flowering gardens to the dynamic, strange beauty of county fairs. Today, he makes art full time in Bath, Ohio. Stephen was an Akron Soul Train fellow in September 2017.

Gabe Gott lives in Akron, Ohio, with his wife, Sarah, the unwitting caretakers of a home for retired house pets. During the day, he works as a team lead/trainer for a market intelligence company based out of Chicago, but during his free time writes fiction and poetry. He has published a novel, Escapes (2014), two flash fiction chapbooks, The Ever-Present Moment (2016) and Dispatches from the Information Age (2017), and a poetry collection, Live Organ Transplants (2017). Gabe was an AST fellow in March 2018.

Jeff Donaldson: Dig

October 27, 2018

This fall the Akron Art Museum will host an exhibition of work by AfriCOBRA artist Jeff Donaldson. In order to design programs and interpretive materials that best serve its visitors, the museum is currently seeking feedback from the community.

On Thursday July 19 at 6:00 PM, the museum hosted a community meeting about the exhibition. We will share the results of that conversation soon.

If you were unable to make it to the July 19 meeting, you can still share your ideas via our online survey.

About the Exhibition
In 1968, artist Jeff Donaldson co-founded the African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists (AfriCOBRA). In response to political and social unrest in an arts world that privileged white artists and audiences, AfriCOBRA sought to create a new kind of art that was not only politically engaged but reflected contemporary Black culture and appealed specifically to a Black audience.

Jeff Donaldson: Dig, the artist’s first museum retrospective, sheds light on Donaldson’s contribution to art history by exploring his four-decade career. Spanning the artist’s activist roots in Chicago to his influence on future generations as a professor at Howard University and Vice President of the Barnes Foundation, this major exhibition presents new scholarship and features works never before seen in public.
