Frederic B. Schell

American
(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1838 - 1902, New York)
Little is known about Schell’s early years, beyond the facts that he studied wood engraving for printmaking in his late teens, and by 1855 was skilled enough as an illustrator to be commissioned to illustrate Civil War scenes for Leslie’s Weekly Magazine.  From 1877 to 1879, he was one of several illustrators to accompany former President General Ulysses S. Grant on a tour through portions of Europe, Asia and Africa.  In addition to his many foreign journeys, Schell traveled in North America extensively.  Among the books he illustrated were Our Continent, which was devoted to the whole of North America, and Picturesque Canada: the country as it was and is.
