Dine creates expressive images of everyday objects to symbolize his feelings.  In this print, he used multiple techniques to suggest two different moods.  He first scratched the image onto a metal printing plate and then rubbed small portions of the plate smooth (on the robe’s collar and sleeves) in order to achieve white areas when the plate was printed.  These spots give the upper portion of the robe a gentle, timeworn quality, while the bottom section, covered with vigorously scribbled lines, conveys a sense of energy and power.
