James Rosenquist supported himself as a billboard painter in the 1950s. He found success the following decade with his paintings and prints based on images clipped from food labels and advertisements, which he described as being from the “land of supermarket plenty and junk.” Drawing on his experience reproducing objects magnified many times their actual size, Rosenquist plays with cropping and scale, creating an image recognizable as spaghetti while simultaneously leaving room for interpretation.
