Working collaboratively from the 1950s, Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtová are credited with establishing glass as a medium for contemporary sculpture and architectural installations.  Both constrained by the Czech government’s restrictions on expression and fostered by its interest in gaining prestige for glass, the husband/wife team described their sculpture as “color in space.” 'Silhouette' is typical of Libensky and Brychtová’s cast glass in its simple blocky shape, contrast of opaque and transparent materials and saturated color.  The changes that take place as the sculpture is viewed from different angles and under different lighting conditions were also a central concern for the artists.
