An accomplished painter, sculptor and designer, Mark Soppeland has been an influential professor at the University of Akron for more than 30 years. When making 'Bridge Over a Strange Place', he was thinking about the artificial constructs we create to help us understand our lives. The bridge serves that purpose, with the mountain signifying the unknowable universe.  From where the figure stands, his goal is inaccessible—although he may also be seen as engaged in contemplation. 'Bridge Over a Strange Place' was assembled by covering circular sections of plywood with slats of wood. The structure was then embellished with layers of acrylic paint, glues, beads, glitter and sequins. The artist uses a found figure from a set of 40 presidents, as symbolic of Everyman.
