Stanley began his career as a commercial artist and created covers for popular magazines such as Sports Illustrated. He later turned to popular media for the subject matter of his fine art paintings, favoring sports scenes, rock stars and even pornography.  Stanley clipped images from newspapers and magazines, enlarged them and often rendered them in two equally bright, saturated colors. He based this eye-popping painting on the album cover for Beach Boys’ Concert, which featured the band’s version of Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s 1962 smash hit Monster Mash. Stanley intended for the two vibrating colors to make the image blur into semi-abstraction, echoing the dizzying effect of repetitive media imagery.
