Formal means - reflected and indirect as well as direct light, blurring, composition, texture, shift of focal plane and multiple exposure - joins figures and props to become carriers of narrative and symbolic content. Ambiguity and paradox, which are Zen teaching tools used to free the mind from logic on the path to enlightenment, were among Meatyard's favorite devices.
