Sommer spent most of his life in Summit County near Brandywine Falls. He painted from the turn-of-the-century through the forties, absorbing the ideas of the Cubists and other avant-garde artists of those years and integrating their concepts and techniques into his own work. His favorite subjects, however, including children and farm scenes, were firmly rooted in the American Midwest.
