From a series titled My Ghost, Fuss made this image of a swan by making a daguerreotype (an early photographic process using a sliver coated metal plate), then scanning the mirror-like surface and printing it in large scale. “Making pictures,” said Fuss “allowed me the possibility of a spiritual life.” While swans are typically considered emblems of love, fidelity, beauty and grace, this one is splayed awkwardly by the rigor of death. In Hindu lore, swans can represent the ability to travel between spiritual worlds. This image is an ode to ephemerality, transition and remembrance.
