Leonard first photographed jazz musicians while still a photography student at Ohio University.  He travelled from Athens to Columbus to hear one of impresario Norman Granz’s “Jazz at the Philharmonic” concerts.  There, Leonard captured this image of Illinois Jacquet, a tenor saxophonist credited with creating the first R&B sax solo.  That night Leonard met Granz, who also founded Verve Records.  Their encounter was the beginning of a relationship that led to Leonard’s photographing of many Verve recording sessions.
