A graduate and longtime faculty member of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Van Duzer left a strong legacy in Cleveland as both an artist and teacher. He completed 'Apartment #10 Looking West' while living in Colorado. Featuring a deconstructed view of a western town, the painting's dynamic composition offers several entry points and paths for the eye to follow. The curves of the tree branches work in tandem with the buildings' architecture to create a dynamic play of depth and perspective. Biographical elements such as a doll resting on top of a drawing inscribed "Caren," the name of Van Duzer's daughter, join with fanciful disembodied eyes and cloud-birds floating in the sky. Fragments of the artist's studio meanwhile merge with the space outside.
