Gift of Susan Tiedman and Kokoon Arts Gallery
A lifelong Cleveland resident and longtime clerk at the Cleveland Public Library, Randall Tiedman grew to maturity as a painter following his retirement. Committed to making art from his youth and largely self-taught, Tiedman explored figurative abstraction for many years. From 2005, the artist turned to a dark palette for landscapes he composed from imagination in his studio, drawing upon his intimate understanding of the industrial networks and bleak sites he had traversed throughout his life. Tiedman described himself as influenced by the Hudson River School, with “iron bridges, chemical plants and office buildings” as his “mountains.” Eschewing critical commentary, the artist instead focused on achieving harmony and balance in his compositions.
