Abandoning a camera, Azzarella adapts his images from recent news media and historic photographs. He alters the original images, removing the most potent content to suggest new meanings, which encourages the viewer to question his or her own memory. The source image in this work was taken at Abu Ghraib, Baghdad, made in 2003-2004. Azzarella digitally eliminated the central black-hooded figure from the iconic source image. Left behind is a box the prisoner was standing on in an empty hallway with United States Army Specialist Charles Graner, who was convicted of prisoner abuse as part of a scandal that roiled domestic and international sentiments against the Iraq War.
