15th Annual Akron Wine Auction to be Held at the Museum for the First Time Ever on Saturday, June 12, 2010

For Release: May 2010

Akron, Ohio, May 7, 2010 — The Akron Art Museum’s 15th annual Akron Wine Auction, presented by Lexus and featuring many changes from past events, is set to be the best in museum history. For the first time ever, the fundraiser will be held at the museum in the Beatrice Knapp McDowell Grand Lobby on Saturday, June 12 at 6:30 pm. All proceeds from the evening will directly benefit the museum’s programming and operations.

“We hope to create an opportunity for our guests to support the mission of the Akron Art Museum at an elegant yet fun event,” said Nick Katanic, chair of this year’s wine auction. “The beautiful, dramatic lobby of the museum is the ideal location and will set the perfect tone for the evening.”

Although the event has been redesigned, the highlight, as always, is the wine. There is something for everyone – featured wines include reds from Burgess Cellars as well as whites from Firestone Vineyard. Representatives from both wineries will be in attendance at the auction – Steve Burgess from Burgess Cellars and Paul Warson from Firestone Vineyard. More information on each featured winery can be found on their respective Web sites, and This year the museum expects 120 wines for the silent auction, which patrons can bid on as they enjoy cocktails before dinner. An additional 20 rare wines will be featured for the live auction after dinner, led by auctioneer Alyssa Quinlan of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to exclusive wines, exciting trips and unique lifestyle items and services will also be up for bid.

Delicious food for the event will be provided by “green” caterer Spice of Life Catering, artisans who are dedicated to the use of local and organic foods from Ohio farms. Dinner will feature a choice of New York strip steak, pan-seared walleye or vegetarian mushroom and buckwheat crepe. Along with these entrée choices, Spice of Life will serve Bibb lettuce salads with strawberries and brie, a selection of tasty hors d’oeuvres and a tempting dessert bar with mini cheesecakes and mini pound cakes. Music during dinner will be provided by pianist John Perry. This year, guests are encouraged to attend in cocktail attire.

Also new this year, after party entertainment will follow the auction on the Akron Golf Charities Terrace. Local DJ sensation Darryl Green will keep the party going with his unique blend of singing and spinning great music.

The annual event is the museum’s largest fundraiser. Doors open at 6 pm, with cocktails, socializing and silent auction bidding beginning at 6:30 pm. Dinner will commence around 7:45 pm, and the after party will begin at 9:30 pm, following the conclusion of dinner and the live auction.

In addition to Lexus, sponsors include Brockman, Coats, Gedelian & Co., Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron, Digestive Health Center, Malone Advertising, Ms. Dana Pulk, Rennick & DeeDee Andreoli and SummaCare.
