"Fall" Back Into Programming at the Akron Art Museum

Akron, Ohio — October through May is peak season for programming at the Akron Art Museum, and with this year’s line-up you won’t want to miss a single class. Prepare to chalk your calendar full of these exciting upcoming events, and look for a winter and spring release later on in the year. Kids and Family Programs – Studio Classes for Kids and Saturday Family Activities
Studio Classes for Kids
A unique time of discovery geared towards children 8 – 12 years old. After investigating works in the galleries, children join educators to explore connections in the classroom. Advanced registration is required – cost per class is $10 for members, $15 for non-members. For more information call 330.376.9186 x229.

Saturday Family Activities
Spend some quality time together as a family on Saturdays at the Akron Art Museum! Both Saturday Family Drop-In Days and Saturday Family Workshops are a great way to engage the whole family in fun, art-inspired activities. Pre-registration is required for Saturday Family Workshops – member’s cost is $5 per participant (adult and children). Non-members cost is $15 per participant. October 30 Special Family Drop-In Night: Trick-or-Treat on South High Street, 6 – 8 pm (Free for members, non-member cost for the scavenger hunt is $5 per child, $7 admission charge for accompanying adults)

November 8 Saturday Family Workshop: Origami Adventures with artist and educator Christine Petrell Kallevig, 1 – 3 pm

December 13 Saturday Family Drop-In Day: 3rd Annual Island of Misfit Toys Workshop, 12 – 4 pm

Music Programs – Third Thursday Concerts, Tuesday Musical Lunchtime Concerts and Akros Percussion Collective
Third Thursdays
On the third Thursday of each month, October through May, start the weekend early with the museum’s edgy, new evening concert series self-titled Third Thursday. In addition to live music, each event will feature a cash bar with happy hour drink specials and signature cocktails, and Museum Store specials that may include guest vendors and sale items. Performance is free.

November 20 Third Thursday concert and cocktails featuring live DJ set and circuit bending performance demonstration by BEATRIX*JAR, 5 – 9 pm

December 18 Third Thursday concert and cocktails featuring live music by Missile Toe, 5 – 9 pm

Tuesday Musical
If you’re available on select Tuesdays at 1 pm, grab a seat in the Charles and Jane Lehner Auditorium for a free hour-long program of vocal and instrumental music performed by local talent and presented by Tuesday Musical Association, with support from Kathy Salem. A reception with light refreshments will follow each concert, and museum docents will be available to give special highlight tours of the museum’s galleries.

November 11 Tuesday Musical Association Concert with soprano Laurie Lashbrook and The University of Akron’s Paragon Brass Quintet, 1 pm

Akros Percussion Collective
Talented, eclectic percussionists present an intimate concert/lecture demonstrating how modern and contemporary composers like John Cage and James Tenney used door buzzers, turn tables, brake drums, bongos and tin cans to create some of the most innovative, classical new music of the twentieth-century. Free with first-come, first-serve seating in the Charles and Jane Lehner Auditorium.

November 2 Akros Percussion Collective presents Snap, Crackle, Pop!, 2 – 4 pm

Art History 101 Lecture Series
This series of thematic drop-in lectures, running October through May, provides an intro to art history for the art novice or a quick refresher course for the rusty art aficionado. Led by University of Akron art history professor Laura Gelfand, the lectures are free to museum members, $7 per lecture for non-members, or $25 for non-members who pre-register for the series. To register call 330.376.9186 x230. Lectures take place in the Charles and Jane Lehner Auditorium.

November 13 Art History 101: Landscape lecture, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

December 11 Art History 101: Portraiture lecture, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Sketching in the Galleries
Sarah Sutton will lead a lesson in drawing techniques, answer questions and provide participants with feedback as they draw in selected galleries. Drawing boards and paper are provided. Only graphite drawing media is allowed in the galleries. This class is free for members and non-members with paid admission into the galleries. For more information call 330.376.9186 x229.

Everyday Art Classes
You may only know how to draw stick figures, but that shouldn't keep you from Everyday Art classes at the Akron Art Museum. Everyday Art won't teach you how to paint like an old master, but this series of hands-on classes will inject a hip and lively dose of art into your daily life. Advanced registration is required. Cost is $25 for members and $35 for non-members. For more information call 330.376.9186 x230.

Admission: Adult general admission is $7, Student and Senior (65+) general admission is $5, Children (12 and under) are FREE, members are FREE. Adult admission to the Norman Rockwell exhibition is $10, Student and Senior admission to the Norman Rockwell exhibition is $8. Rockwell admission includes admission to the collection. On the first Tuesday of every month, individual admissions to the collection are FREE. Special exhibitions may require paid admission. No tours available on these days.
