Get Creative
Fun for All Ages at the Akron Art Museum

As the new school year ramps up, the Akron Art Museum offers fun solutions for your child’s unlimited imagination. Creative Playdates, Story Time in the Galleries, Studio Classes, Family Drop-Ins and gallery activities make the museum your child’s favorite go-to place this fall.
ALL NEW! CREATIVE PLAYDATES: for 3 to 5 year olds and their grownups
Creativity is about inventing, experimenting, growing, making mistakes and having fun – something preschoolers know all about. Encourage your little ones’ creativity by filling their days with new experiences at the museum. Admission is free for children and their grown-ups; advanced registration is required.

Yoga for the Young, Thursday, October 3, 2013, 11:15 am
Little ones will balance, stretch and breathe in the lobby with yoga instructors from Nirvana Yoga. The relaxation and fun will continue as visitors use their newly nimble hands to bend, twist and stretch colorful materials to make a masterpiece to take home.

Messy Playdate! Thursday, December 5, 2013, 11:15 am
Get your hands and even feet messy as paint, clay and other art supplies are squished, splattered and sprayed during this sloppy studio experience. Don’t worry, we’ll clean you up and let your artwork dry before it’s time to head home.

KIDS STUDIO CLASSES: for 8 to 12 year olds
Use your imagination and creative skills to make innovative projects with local artist-educators. All classes are in the museum classroom and require advanced registration. Cost per class $10/member child, $15/nonmember child.

Shrinking Art, Saturday, October 19, 2013, 12-3 pm
Construct a surreal scene by creating a background and then adding in incredible shrinking artworks that you’ll make from plastic melted with a bit of heat for a dramatic shift in scale.

Limited Edition, Saturday, November 16, 2013, 12-3 pm
Get your hands a little inky as you learn about the printmaking process with a local printmaker. You’ll design a drawing, run it through a press, and leave with a limited edition work of your own.

STORY TIME IN THE GALLERIES:  Thursday, October 17November 21December 19, 11:15 am
Hugely popular during the recent Ezra Jack Keats exhibition, Story Time is back by popular demand! If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the fantastic tales the museum’s paintings, drawings, photos and sculptures have to share with us. Join museum educators in the galleries to read a selection of picture books inspired by the artworks on view. Story Time and gallery admission are free. No registration required. Simply meet the educators in the museum’s lobby.

TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL FAMILY DAY:  Friday, October 18, 2013, 12-4 pm
You don’t have to play hooky to enjoy a day of creativity. Chances are you have the day off, so celebrate this short school vacation with a visit to the museum. Experiment and play with art making materials in the lobby. Then, head into the galleries to explore the museum’s collection and special exhibitions. Admission is free for families; advanced registration is not required.

TRICK OR TREAT ON SOUTH HIGH STREET: Thursday, October 24, 2013, 6:30-8:30 pm
Do you ever feel like Halloween can’t come soon enough? Break out your costume early and head to the museum for a night of art-making fun and surprises. You’ll trick-or-treat in the galleries, encountering mysterious landscapes and eerie cities in the Real/Surreal exhibition. What will your treats be? Art supplies, of course! Cost is $5 per child. Advanced registration is required.

ISLAND OF MISFIT TOYS WORKSHOP: Saturday, December 5, 2013, 11 am-5 pm
Make room for new toys by bashing old ones into bits and pieces. Then use the doll arms, truck wheels, and googly eyes to construct your own one-of-a-kind sculpture. Enjoy special musical performances presented by Tuesday Musical Association at 1 pm and 3 pm, in the auditorium. There is no charge for this event but we ask that each family brings one new, unwrapped toy to donate to children in need. Advanced registration required, choose from one of three workshop times: 11:30 am-1 pm, 1:30-3 pm or 3:30-5 pm.
