For Release: June 13, 2017
Akron, Ohio—The 2017 Annual Auction benefiting the Akron Art Museum was held on Saturday, June 10th at the Akron Art Museum, raising over $250,000 in support of the museum’s exhibition, education and community programming. The sellout crowd of more than 200 attendees began the evening with a stroll through the Bud and Susie Rogers Garden, enjoyed classical music as they browsed over 80 silent auction items, and a tour of the galleries including the new collection exhibition Serial Intent.
Dinner was served by Spice Kitchen, a local caterer lauded for its farm to table cuisine. Guests reveled in wines provided by Au Bon Climat, the California vineyard of Akron native Jim Clendenen. The acclaimed vintner addressed the crowd and shared stories of his life growing up in Akron and his rise to success in the high-end wine industry. The event included both silent and live auctions, plus cognac and chocolates with live jazz under the lights of the museum on the beautiful summer night.
“This year’s auction celebrated everything the Akron Art Museum means to this city. A gathering such as this demonstrates the power of the arts in Akron. The financial support generated on this single night helps us continue our mission of enriching the lives of residents near and far with creative experiences featuring world-class modern and contemporary art.” said Executive Director and CEO Mark Masuoka.
The support provided by the museum’s largest annual fundraiser will help continue the museum’s ability to present the finest modern and contemporary art, provide creative community-building programming and support the vital arts community in Summit County. Masuoka also stated, “Special thanks goes out to our presenting sponsor the Lehner Family Foundation and our platinum sponsors Cohen & Co. and McMillen Family Companies for their leadership in making this night possible.”
The Annual Auction, now in its 22nd year, continues to invite new people into the Akron Art Museum family, while growing and welcoming the critical next generation of supporters. Chaired by Akron Art Museum board member David Pelland and his wife Jillian, this year’s auction focused on bringing the outside in. The playful theme was inspired by the museum’s popular summer program Inside|Out, which brings art into our communities.
“We are thrilled to have welcomed so many new faces to the museum and look forward to welcoming people back often to enjoy this beautiful space,” Director of Advancement Bryan de Boer said. “For so many the Akron Art Museum shines as a beacon enhancing the quality of life for all who enjoy it. This year’s auction celebrates our mantra Live Creative, making experiences like these available for everyone.”
The live auction featured trips to California, Nashville and Florida. Plenty of fine art and wine was paired with many other exciting and interesting items to bid on, making the museum’s annual auction eclectic in comparison to others in Northeast Ohio. The Akron Art Museum thanked all of its patrons and guests and paid special tribute to Spice Kitchen, Au Bon Climat, and Jeff and Lisa Bruno for all their support in making this night truly one to remember.
