news release Akron Art Museum is #GivingBackAgain
For Release: November 13, 2018
Akron, Ohio—The Akron Art Museum is building on the success of #GivingBackTuesday 2017, when the museum flipped the script on Giving Tuesday, a day of financially supporting nonprofits, by stepping forward with its own bold initiative of generosity and giving away over ten thousand new memberships in one day. This year the museum is putting the generosity in the hands of its current members by offering them the opportunity to give a free gift membership to someone whose year they want to fill with art. The project, #GivingBackAgain, begins on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 and runs through the end of the year.
John S. Knight Director and CEO Mark Masuoka said, “We see #GivingBackAgain as the perfect extension of last year’s membership campaign. We’ve seen tremendous engagement and enthusiasm by new members and feel it is important to continue welcoming more of our community in to participate in all our events and public programs. And this year, we are offering current members the opportunity to share their love for the museum with the gift of membership. We believe art is for everyone, and we strive to be as open, accessible and inclusive as possible.”
During the museum’s one-day-only #GivingBackTuesday campaign of 2017, over ten thousand people signed up to receive a free year-long individual membership, which expires on November 29, 2018. Since then, the museum has welcomed thousands of new members. Many have been first-time visitors, enjoying enriching art experiences, such as exhibitions like Jun Kaneko: Blurred Lines to Downtown@Dusk summer concerts, programs for kids and families and much more.
Masuoka said, “#GivingBackAgain is part of our ongoing efforts to break down barriers to meaningful art experiences at the Akron Art Museum. It’s in keeping with the generosity of spirit that we’ve long cultivated at the museum, and that includes Free Thursdays, investment in downtown Akron with the Bud and Susie Rogers Garden and the John S. and James L. Knight building, and reflects back into the museum’s legacy. We want everyone to feel that they belong here and have a sense of ownership. One of the best ways to get connected is to be a member of the museum and to know that you are contributing to the vibrancy of Akron’s art community.”
#GivingBackAgain at the Akron Art Museum begins on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 and runs through midnight, December 31, 2018. Anyone who is currently an active member of the museum at any membership level except the $25 Art Seeker level can give away one free Art Enthusiast Individual membership (regularly $50) to the person of their choosing. Current members can also give away upgraded gift memberships by paying the difference in the rates, so a $75 Art House Family membership would be $25, a $150 Art Advocate membership would be $100, and so forth. The gift membership must be given to someone other than the member giving it.
Individual Art Enthusiast gift memberships will be available to current museum members online or in person. The gift membership option will also be available to members who pay to renew their personal membership during the run of the project, as well as to people who pay to join as new members. Anna Brown, who joined with her daughter Claire during the #GivingBackTuesday campaign in 2017, said “The Akron Art Museum is a happy place for us. It's a place where you can leave your worries behind and absorb the ideas and viewpoints and talent and the stories of the different artists. Claire loves all the programs and events for kids. The staff does such a great job tying the exhibits to fun hands-on activities. I'd say because of all the movies and music in the summer and all that goes on in the galleries year round, the art museum is our community center.”
