news release Akron Art Museum Opens Live Creative Studio for Families On-the-Go

For Release: June 6, 2019

Akron, Ohio—All summer long, the Akron Art Museum is inviting kids and families to the newly-opened Live Creative Studio, open Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. During weekday hours, families can visit the museum to spend time together exploring the process of idea-making with various art mediums and techniques. Museum studio instructors will be available to guide visitors. No appointments or reservations are needed, just drop in.

John S. Knight Director and CEO Mark Masuoka said, “The Live Creative Studio is the realization of the first part of a promise we made when we announced our $25 million centennial campaign last month: to create a permanent home for the museum’s education and public programs. The newly-redesigned space is going to delight visitors.”

The studio is located in the museum’s Rory and Dedee O’Neil Lobby and the adjoining Mary S. and David C. Corbin Foundation Gallery. The lobby space is an active, creative workshop, where families can explore numerous art mediums and techniques, guided by museum studio instructors. The gallery space provides families the opportunity to look at new art made by working Ohio artists and engage in self-directed, constructive play inspired by the art on display. Artwork on view in the Live Creative Studio includes textiles, sculpture, paintings and even wallpaper.

Live Creative Studio is open to everyone on weekdays from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Tuesday through Friday, with museum studio instructors. On Saturday and Sunday, the gallery and the hands-on stations will be open, but the lobby workshop will be closed, and no museum studio instructors will be present.

Admission is free for members and children age 17 and under with an adult. Regular museum admission prices apply to nonmember adults, except on Thursdays, when admission is free for everyone.

Exhibitions and programming in the Mary S. and David C. Corbin Foundation Gallery, including the Live Creative Studio, are made possible with support from the Mary S. and David C. Corbin Foundation with additional funding from OMNOVA Solutions Foundation, Peg’s Foundation, Robert O. and Annamae Orr Family Foundation, Charles E. and Mabel M. Richie Foundation and Mr. and Mrs. William H. Considine.
