news release Live Creative Summer Studio for Families at the Akron Art Museum

For Release: May 30, 2018

Akron, Ohio—The Akron Art Museum is giving families a place to unplug and make lasting memories on their own timeline, no reservations needed, Tuesdays through Fridays from June 5 through August 24, with a new program entitled Live Creative Summer Studio. The studio will be available in the museum’s Beatrice Knapp McDowell Grand Lobby from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. for families to drop-in when they choose. Education staff will be available to help caregivers facilitate play and exploration of a variety of hands-on art activities for visitors.

Educator for Family and Children’s Programs Amanda Crowe said, “Our goal with Live Creative Summer Studio is to meet the needs of busy families who live for those unplanned moments of wonder, when they can stop by and spend some quality time together—even if it’s 20 minutes on a summer afternoon—playing and creating.”

No registration is required to visit the Summer Studio. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The program is free for museum members and all children under age 17 every day. Regular museum admission applies to nonmember adults on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Admission is free for everyone, members and nonmembers alike on Thursdays.

“NEA studies support that families who regularly visit museums together have greater connectivity,” said Crowe. “Making a conscious effort to take your family to the museum provides a strong foundation for self-acceptance, trying new things and tolerance of others’ ideas. It’s also about collecting shared experiences in a sort of safety deposit box of cherished memories for your family’s future.”

Thursdays will bring an added level of activity for families at the museum. Beginning June 7 and every Thursday through August 23, the museum will offer Family Summer Adventure Tours at 11:30 A.M. The tours include a 30-minute gallery experience and a 30-minute hands-on experience in the Live Creative Summer Studio. Designed just for families, the tours encourage young visitors and their grown-ups to discover treasures, hunt for clues and experience artwork in the galleries to see the world in a new way. Family Summer Adventure Tours are free for all families. Registration is required at

Akron Art Museum Director of Education, Alison Caplan said, “This isn’t your typical museum tour. Families will have a chance to get down with a robot, explore a pond in the galleries and talk on the phone with Elvis or at least pretend to do all of those things through games, songs and kinesthetic activities.”

The museum will round out a summer of programs for families with Family Days and a new program, Member Stroller Tours. Family Days and themes are as follows:

Saturday, June 2 • 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. • Backyard Art-BQ, featuring summer cookout-inspired art activities in the Bud and Susie Rogers Garden

Thursday, July 19 • 7:30 – 10:30 P.M. • Outdoor Movie Night, featuring a screening of Cars 3 (art activities from 7:30 to 8:30 P.M.) (film screening from 9:00 to 10:30 P.M.)

Saturday, August 18 • 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. • School Is Cool, presenting art experiences to kick start your child’s school year with artful approaches to math, science, early literacy and creative movement

Family Days are designed for children ages 0 to 12 with an adult caregiver. Event-related activities are free and admission to the museum galleries is free for members and all children 17 and under. Regular gallery admission applies to nonmember adults.

A new program, Member Stroller Tours, presents gallery tours for caregivers and their babies from birth to 12 months old. Participants can bring their children in hands-free baby carriers or strollers on tours specially charted for baby’s budding curiosity and visual stimulation, while learning intriguing items about the artists’ family lives, upbringing and early creative influences. Stroller tours and themes are listed below:

Sunday, June 10 • 12:00 – 12:45 P.M. • B.Y.O.B. — Bring Your Own Bib

Sunday, August 12 • 12:00 – 12:45 P.M. • Playing It by Ear
