Third Thursdays at the Akron Art Museum Begin in October

For Release: September 2009

Akron, Ohio, September 29, 2009 — Feeling the blues because Downtown@Dusk ended? Well, get ready to smile! Beginning October 15, the Akron Art Museum’s Third Thursday concert series returns with a trio of edgy, entertaining and educational activities from 6:30 to 9 pm.

Third Thursdays still includes eclectic musical performances by buzz-generating artists from the local scene and beyond; however, this year adds in a couple of new elements. The first is the ARTLab series that features drop-in mini-workshops exploring trends in contemporary arts and crafts led by artists, designers and educators. The second is the Quick Look mini-tour. During the band’s break, participants can spend five minutes getting to know fellow Third Thursday art enthusiasts and one work of art currently on display.

In addition, local microbreweries have been invited to Third Thursday events to show off their products and chat about the nuances of their brews. If beer isn’t your libation of choice, enjoy a glass of wine at the cash bar or pick up a cup of fair trade coffee at Hattie’s Café Express along with a hearty sandwich or light snack.

2009 Schedule

October 15 – Third Thursday Concert, Masquerade Mash, 6:30 – 9 pm
Enjoy a surprise mash-up of local indie bands as they costume up and pay homage to their influences. Join Shivering Timbers and Crystal Visions for a night of Neil Diamond and Fleetwood Mac covers. The evening’s ARTLab features a special Halloween presentation of the cabaret figure drawing event known as Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School and the Quick Look tour will focus on Emile-Antoine Bourdelle’s Figures Hurlantes (Howling Figures). The featured microbrewery is Thirsty Dog Brewing Company. This event is FREE and features a cash bar.

November 19 – Third Thursday Concert, Beats and Bling, 6:30 – 9 pm
Be one of the first to see the unveiling of Mickalene Thomas’ Girlfriends and Lovers, an amazing new painting slated to become part of the museum’s collection. Stop by ARTLab to create glittery bottle cap bling inspired by the unveiled work, while grooving to the percussive beats of HeartBEAT Afrika as they mesh street and traditional African percussion that incorporates storytelling and dance. The featured microbrewery is Hoppin’ Frog Brewery. This event is FREE and features a cash bar.

December 17 – Third Thursday Concert and Holiday mART, 6:30 – 9 pm
Missile Toe, self-declared “World’s Greatest Christmas Band,” is back to rock out and raise your holiday spirits! Check the last few people off of your gift list by picking up unique handcrafted items at the return of Holiday mART, and then stop by the museum’s ARTLab to hand-craft your own holiday wrapping paper. The featured microbrewery is Brown Derby Roadhouse/Miss Jane’s Brew House. This event is FREE and features a cash bar.

Parking is FREE in the High Street municipal garage directly across the street from the entrance of the Akron Art Museum. All activities take place in the Beatrice Knapp McDowell Grand Lobby.
