Message Matters: A Year-Long Message of Love to Akron

For Release: Feb. 3, 2015

Akron, Ohio – The blinking lights in the stairwell of the Akron Art Museum aren’t the result of an electrical malfunction, they’re a Morse code message of love that has been beaming into the heart of downtown every night for nearly a year. Message Matters, a site-specific light installation by artist Jamie Burmeister has been blinking out the message “Luv U” over and over each night since Feb. 14, 2014.

Executive Director and CEO Mark Masuoka, who has worked with Burmeister on public art projects in the past, said “Message Matters is one of several art interventions the Akron Art Museum has undertaken. It’s but one small part of our on-going commitment to bring forth art experiences that engage, inspire, and strengthen the cultural well-being of the community.”

The installation of Message Matters is coming to an end after Valentine’s Day, 2015. “But that does not mean the love is coming to an end,” said Masuoka. “Far from it. It merely means that the Akron Art Museum is planning and implementing new ways of expressing its love for Akron. We look for ways to spark ideas and the kind of creativity and collaboration that Akron has become known for.”

In honor of Message Matters’ closing, the Akron Art Museum has produced two brief video valentines it hopes people will share with loved ones online using social media. Members of the community might also be inspired to create their own valentines by filming or photographing Message Matters.

The museum plans to share videos and images made by visitors related to Message Matters by using the searchable social media tag #MessageMatters.
