Sample Downtown’s Cultural Delights the First Sunday of Each Month

For Release: August 2009

Akron, Ohio, August 19, 2009 — Make downtown Akron your destination on the first Sunday of each month and sample a variety of the area’s cultural treats. The Akron Art Museum has teamed up with downtown Akron-Summit County Public Library and Summit Artspace to present a full, fun-filled schedule of FREE programs and activities that add up to Sunday Sampler.

Enjoy a lively gallery talk or historical lecture as you stroll through a special exhibition. Play with crafty art materials during Family Drop-In Day activities. Settle into a cozy family story time session, take in a documentary and learn new art techniques as you watch an artist demonstrate her craft…all in a single Sunday afternoon!

In addition to the fun activities, free trolley transportation will be provided by the City of Akron between 11 am – 5 pm. Each month the trolley will stop at a different community center, picking up visitors every half hour starting at 11 am and taking them to the art museum. The last community center pick up is at 3 pm. The last return trip to the community center leaves the art museum at 4:45 pm. In September, meet the trolley at the Ed Davis Community Center, 730 Perkins Park Drive, in Akron.

Events and Activities – September 6, 2009

At the Akron Art Museum, which is open 11 am – 5 pm, enjoy free gallery admission during the opening weekend of Chuck Close: Familiar Faces in Ohio Collections. At the exhibition related Family Drop-In event, enjoy kid-friendly activities that focus on portraiture and the work of Close. Experience a family friendly, interactive portrait tour, create a portrait mash-up using facial features of works in the museum’s collection and work from instant snapshots to create flattering fingerprint portraits of family and friends from 12 – 3 pm.

Across the street at the downtown Akron-Summit County Public Library, which is open 1 – 5 pm, the story of Akron’s famous historic resident and abolitionist comes to life in the Special Collections Department’s John Brown artifacts exhibition. The exhibition is part of the community’s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia). Families with young children can also enjoy Sunday Story Time Sampler in the Children’s Library at 2 pm.

Summit Artspace, located two blocks east of the museum at the corner of Market and Summit, is open from 11 am – 5 pm and features the fifth annual juried show Fresh and Witty. The Akron Society of Artists will be conducting tours, artists will be demonstrating from 12 – 2 pm and an Artist Meet & Greet will take place from 2 – 4 pm in the What’s New? exhibition featuring new work by local artists. Refreshments, an artwork sale and door prize drawing add to the fun.
