Travel Channel Host Lee Sandstead to Lecture at the Akron Art Museum
For Release: May 2009
Akron, Ohio, May 6, 2009 — The Akron Art Museum is excited to host Lee Sandstead’s lecture, “I’m Having an Art Attack” as part of the resident Art History 101 lecture series at 6:30 pm on Thursday, May 14, 2009. Lee has developed a national reputation as an exciting and dramatic speaker, and has expressed his passion for art at over 50 major institutions including: Harvard, Yale, New York University and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is also one of America's most-celebrated photographers of art, and his photography has been featured in countless books and publications, including: "The New York Times"; "Fortune"; "Ms."; "Preservation Magazine"; and "Style 1900."
This past fall, Lee started what may be his grandest art adventure of all: the first season of “Art Attack with Lee Sandstead” on the Travel Channel, in which Sandstead takes viewers on an exciting journey through America’s top museums, examining each establishments’ five must-see pieces without pretension or snobbery, and in his trademark high-impact, passionate manner.
When asked how all of this feels to a small-town Southern boy, Lee laughs: “Growing up, I never saw myself as a TV show host — let alone one about art! I was raised in a house trailer, and we were certainly not sitting around talking about art and high culture. We were wondering if the water pipes were going to freeze during the winter or if an open oven door was a satisfactory work-around for a broken furnace!” With the support of his beautiful French girlfriend, Lee discovered art, which soon became his highest passion. “Looking at art is not one of the ‘coolest’ things a young man in Middle Tennessee could be doing with his time. And when my friends would visit my house, I would catch quite a bit of flack — because I covered the walls from floor to ceiling with prints of famous art works. Yep, down came the NASCAR posters and up went the Rembrandts!”
The lecture is free for members and $7 for non-members, and takes place Thursday, May 14 at 6:30 pm in the museum’s Charles and Jane Lehner Auditorium.
