Visit the Akron Art Museum for FREE THURSDAY Starting October 3

For Release: September 2013

Free Thursdays sponsored by The J.M. Smucker Company
Free Gallery Admission Every Thursday

The Akron Art Museum is THE place to be on Thursdays! Beginning October 3, 2013, and every Thursday thereafter, all visitors will enjoy free all-day gallery admission (from 11 am to 9 pm) and robust programming throughout the day that includes art talks, films, classes, concerts and other special events.

Free Thursdays, generously sponsored by The J.M. Smucker Company, enhances the museum’s position as a dynamic regional center of cultural exchange. It offers the entire community additional opportunities to explore the galleries and enjoy special programs throughout the day.

“As we re-vision the museum’s role in the community, we acknowledged that everyone deserves an exciting and enriching art experience,” said museum Executive Director and CEO Mark Masuoka, “This generous gift from Smucker's provides the museum staff valuable resources to enhance visitors’ engagement and their connection to the creative process. Free Thursday programs will make art relevant to audiences of all ages.”

October 3 begins with a Creative Playdate at 11:15 am in the lobby, when children ages 3-5 years old and their grownups participate in Yoga for the Young. Little ones will balance, stretch and breathe with yoga instructors from Nirvana Yoga. The relaxation and fun will continue as visitors use their newly nimble hands to bend, twist and stretch colorful materials to make a masterpiece to take home.

Later at 7 pm, the Ohio premiere of the documentary film “Herb & Dorothy 50x50” will be shown in the museum’s Charles and Jane Lehner Auditorium. Herb and Dorothy Vogel, retired postal worker and his reference librarian wife, devoted their life to collecting what would eventually become one of the largest and most important art collections in American history. In 2008 they launched a national project with the National Gallery of Art, in Washington DC to give a total of 2,500 artworks from their collection to one museum in every state. The Akron Art Museum was selected as the recipient of Ohio’s 50 works. The film captures this chapter of the Vogel’s extraordinary life.
