American
Tyrone Geter grew up as a Black man in Anniston, Alabama during a time defined by strict segregation laws and social injustice. Geter received his MFA in painting from
Ohio University in 1975. In 1979, he relocated to Zaria, Nigeria, a move that proved to be a turning point in his development and growth as an artist. For seven years he taught
at Ahmadu Bello University and lived, drew, and painted among the Fulani and other local peoples of Northern Nigeria. During this period, he created numerous paintings
that captured the richness and depth of the cultures of Northern Nigeria. He returned to the United States in 1987 for a teaching position at the University of Akron. He was a
professor of advanced drawing and painting at UAkron from 1988–1998. From 1999 until his retirement in 2017 he was a professor of painting and drawing and a curator of
the Ponder Fine Arts Gallery at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.
Geter has also been recognized internationally, having his artwork exhibited in the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Senegal, Japan, and China, and creating a significant commissioned mural at the Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has illustrated ten children’s books, including Irene and the Big, Fine Nickel, the origin of one of the proposed acquisitions, which is a study from the creation of the book.
