THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON

Janice Troutman, Director, Mary Schiller Myers School of Art

What is the importance of the Akron Art Museum to the University of Akron’s students, faculty, and staff?

Akron is incredibly fortunate to have a contemporary art museum, an asset from which few cities of our scale benefit. The Museum is an extension of our classrooms on many levels. Students gain valuable knowledge and are inspired by viewing artwork in person, visiting exhibitions as a class with their instructors, participating in Museum programming, and sharing their knowledge and skills with the community through technical demonstrations.

How has the Museum impacted the University?

Having an art museum just blocks from the art/design school is invaluable for the enrichment of Myers students as well as the entire university community. We have historically shared resources and are eager to further reinvigorate this relationship. The Museum’s auditorium not only allows presentations by our internationally renowned resident visiting artists to accommodate larger audiences, but also extends our reach further into the Northeast Ohio community. These events help us emphasize the Museum’s rich cultural benefits to our students while highlighting our School’s offerings and accomplishments to a broader audience. The Museum also provides a platform for experiential learning through the support work that students engage in as well as their employment in a variety of positions where they gain hands-on, practical experience.

Share how the partnership between the University and the Museum has grown.

There has always been a close connection with the Myers School of Art, but extending membership to every UA student allows all majors to benefit from what our greater community has to offer. In addition to work with the art school, the Museum has partnered with Undergraduate Student Government in providing innovative programs that engage students in the institution and in downtown Akron in general. Orientation events at the Museum allow all new students to experience the art museum and downtown Akron.

Do particular works in the collection or current or past exhibitions have a special connection to the University of Akron?

Most recently, many students from the Myers School of Art, UA’s Undergraduate Student Government, and several other leadership organizations participated in public events connected to the Keith Haring exhibition. Building on the excitement surrounding the show, students had the opportunity to create artwork inspired by Haring and share their talents with Museum visitors. In addition, coordinating committees on campus like SAVE (Sexual Assault Violence Education) and CARE team groups attended the exhibition as an educational and cultural opportunity.

Several of our current and emeritus faculty, including Charles Beneke, Andrew Borowiec, Kate Budd, Matthew Kolodziej, Penny Rakoff, Mark Soppeland, and Hui-Chu Ying, all of whose work is shown internationally, have exhibited at the Museum and/or had work acquired for the collection.

In 2015 Charles Beneke’s Specter, a print-based installation, invited visitors to consider their role in our current climate crisis. This ambitious work transformed from wallpaper, in which the pattern evolved across a 36-foot expanse telling the story of industrial to post-industrial society, into a cloud of pollution that confronted the viewer with the danger of our continued disregard. The exhibition also included a “Trade Your Carbon for Art” wall that invited viewers to take action and make changes in their personal lives to contribute toward collective solutions to help save our planet. Specter included screen and relief printing and laser-cut paper as well as an artist’s book. The entirety of the exhibition highlighted the broad potential and reach of print media as well as art’s ability to activate community engagement.

Distinguished Professor Matthew Kolodziej approaches painting as a process of inquiry into the way we understand time, material, and space. His participation in the Frameworks exhibition in 2018 explored the intersection of the constructed environments we make and the virtual and digital spaces of the modern world. Global influences as disparate as the contemplative temples and technology districts of Japan and the industrial landscapes of the United States shape images that appear to be in constant flux. The exhibition was concurrent with the first FRONT Triennial, which brought international attention to the creative resources and community in Northeast Ohio.
