Dmitri Baltermants

(Warsaw, Poland, 1912 - 1990, Moscow, Russia)

Europe, Russian

Official photographer to the Kremlin and picture editor of the popular magazine Ogonyok , Dmitri Baltermants was the premier photojournalist in the Soviet Union for five decades. While his work covered most of twentieth century Soviet history, many of his most well known work is from World War II. During and right after the war, Soviet censors would allow only positive images to be published. Baltermants often shot images of the human suffering that results from war, but these, his most moving images, were not known until the 1960s and not widely seen in the West until after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
