Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Lydia Okumura is a third-generation Japanese Brazilian. After graduating in Plastic Art at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) in 1973, Okumura exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennale where she received an award. She then moved to the US and studied at the Pratt Graphic Center. In 1978, Okumura visited Japan on a Japan Foundation scholarship. She has since lived in Japan, Brazil and New York.
