At age fifteen James Gobel moved to Las Vegas and instantly fell in love with its lights and neon. He frequently used glitter in his early paintings to celebrate the city’s luminosity. Gobel eventually began using felt and yarn, the highly tactile media that he works with today. Gobel received his MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1999) and his BFA from the University of Nevada Las Vegas (1996). He has been included in group exhibitions at the Las Vegas Art Museum (2007), Art Rotterdam, the Netherlands (2005), and the New Museum, New York (2005). Gobel had solo exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles and the Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara (2000).
