Creighton Michael

Creighton Michael was trained as an art historian and a painter. After receiving a BFA in Studio Art from The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Michael went on to earn an MA in Art History from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and an MFA in Painting and Multimedia from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Michael’s art is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.; the Brooklyn Museum, NY; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; the Denver Art Museum, CO; and the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC. He has been awarded a Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Sculpture. In addition to creating art, Michael has taught at Rhode Island School of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Art, Princeton University, and Hunter College, NY.

Michael’s diverse influences include the automatic writing style of French writer and poet André Breton and the Surrealists, as well as the art of Francis Bacon, Antoni Tapies and Lee Bontecou, all of whom crossed boundaries between painting and sculpture in their work. Other sources of inspiration include calligraphy, hieroglyphics, magic, science fiction, and the precision of Northern Renaissance painting.
