M.J. Sharp

M.J. Sharp has worked as a photographer for more than two decades in and around Durham, North Carolina. After earning a BA in psychology from Duke University in 1983, Sharp worked as a staff photographer for the Durham Independent and as a freelance photographer for the Ford Foundation, the New York Times and the New York Times Magazine. Burned out by the pace of photojournalism, Sharp abandoned photography for several years in the early 2000s.
After returning to photography, Sharp developed a different set of shooting techniques. She divides her more recent work between exteriors shot by moonlight, and interiors, which are often close-up studies of discarded objects, also shot at night.
In 2007, Sharp earned an MFA in photography from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 2004 to 2009, she taught photography at the Duke Center for Documentary Studies. Since then, she has been a visiting lecturer in photography at the University of North Carolina and at Duke University.
