An Akron native, Angelo Merendino studied photography at Cuyahoga Community College, but is primarily self-taught. He currently works as a freelance photographer for Corbis News and Getty Images. Merendino’s work has been exhibited in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Rome, Italy. Online features of his photography have appeared on The New Yorker Photo Booth, The Huffington Post and The Guardian. Printed press includes The New York Times, The USA Today and Polka. Merendino has recently received widespread recognition and news coverage for his photo-documentary project The Battle We Didn’t Choose – My Wife’s Fight with Breast Cancer. The series of photographs chronicles the day-to-day life of Merendino and his wife Jennifer, also an Akron native, from her diagnosis 5 months after their marriage until her death in 2011. In the years following her death, Merendino has returned to Cleveland from New York. He has continued to facilitate this project by producing an e-book of his photographs, maintaining a blog about his experience as a caregiver and now widower, and through exhibitions of his photographs including a 2013 exhibition at the Cleveland Print Room. Merendino has established a non-profit organization called The Love You Share to provide financial assistance to women in need while they are receiving treatment for breast cancer.
