McDermott & McGough

( - )

North America & Ireland, American

McDermott & McGough appeared as Victorian dandies delivered from a time machine into the downtown New York art scene of the early 1980s. This collaborative team of artists, David McDermott and Peter McGough, are known for their multidisciplinary work in painting, photography, sculpture and film. Subject matter in all these media deal with pop art and culture, religion, advertising, science, history and sexuality. Their work often takes on both the style and technique of past art movements to comment on the contemporary world. To drive the point home, artworks are back-dated to the appropriate period the artists imagine they would have been made. Their lives even became performance, dressed as 19th century gentlemen, living in a Lower East Side home stripped of modernity and lit only by candle light. The pair currently live on an estate in Dublin and are in the process of de-modernizing it. McDermott & McGough have exhibited in three Whitney Biennials and were featured in a mid-career retrospective at the Provincial Museum voor Moderne Kunst, Oostende, Belgium, in 1997. Their work can be found in the collections of: International Center of Photography, New York, La Collezione Terrae Motus, Caserta, Italy, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
