Marvin Jones

An artist whose work has been characterized as “portraits of emotional disconnect,” Marvin Jones was an active member of the NEO art community following his appointment to the art department faculty at Cleveland State University in 1976. Born and raised in Illinois, Jones received his B.A. from Anderson College in Indiana in 1964 and his M.A. in sculpture from the University of California at Davis, where he studied with William T. Wiley and Roy DeForest. The Chicago Imagist artists, Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso, as well as Mayan and Peruvian art, are cited as influences on his work. An avid art collector, Jones had a special appreciation for work by “outsider” artists and as well as Native American, Oceanic and African art.

Prior to arriving in Cleveland, Jones taught at Sierra College (Rocklin, California), the University of Alberta, Karl Marx University in Germany and the Kansas City Art Institute. A recipient of grants Jones from the Montalvo Center for the Arts and Ohio Arts Council, Jones’s professional activities included serving as a visiting artist/lecturer in California; Leipzig and Dresden, Germany, Missouri and Ohio. Jones’s work has been featured in more than 75 exhibitions in the United States, Canada and Europe and his work is included in more than 40 public collections throughout the world, including those of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Kansas City Art Institute, Minneapolis College of Art and Design and San Francisco Art Institute.
