Honoré Guilbeau

Local artist Honoré Guilbeau was a dancer and costume designer early in her career. Much of her art depicts dance and theater scenes rendered in a sleek, stylized manner. She trained as a printmaker at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Ms. Guilbeau taught Design, Ceramics and Lithography at the Akron Art Institute in the 1940s. Guilbeau was also a participant in the regional Works Project Administration/Federal Art Project based in Cleveland, where she was hired to to design sets and costumes for the Cleveland Theatre for Youth. While her early prints depict dancers and actors, the people and landscapes depicted in her later lithographs and woodcuts reflect her travels throughout the South, Southwest, Mexico and Latin America. She gained a national audience working as a book illustrator in the 1950s and 1960s.
