In his moody, romantic paintings, Cleveland artist Carl Gaertner captured the varied beauty of the American landscape. His views of sprawling factories, rustic farms, historic beach resorts and windswept lakeshores earned him a reputation as a master of American Scene painting, a naturalistic style popular in the 1920s through 1950s. Educated at the Cleveland School of Art (now Cleveland Institute of Art), Gaertner influenced a generation of artists through teaching at his alma mater from 1925 to 1952. From the 1920s through the 1940s, he received several awards at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s annual May Shows and exhibited his work around the country. In the 1940s, he was represented by Macbeth Gallery in New York, and prestigious museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art began to collect his work. Shortly after his premature death, Gaertner was honored with a memorial exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
