Richard Powers was a commercial illustrator of children's books and a painter. He studied at Loyola University, the Chicago Art Institute and the University of Illinois. He illustrated numerous children's books, cover designs, and poetry books for Dell Publishing and a series on "Major Cultures of the World" for World Publishing." He has also illustrated for Esquire, Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, Life, and Natural History. In addition to conventional illustration, he also was also known for a body of science fiction and fantasy work.
