Between 1930 and 1938, Heartfield published 237 photomontages in the German magazine "Arbeiter-Illustrietre Zeitung" (Workers' Illstrated Paper, abbreviated "AIZ") the magazine was renamed in1936 "Volks Illustrietre (People's Illustrated, abbreviated "VI"). Heartfield fled Nazi Germany during the war and lived in London, returning in 1950 to the newly founded German Democratic Republic.
