Weegee

(Zolochiv, Ukraine, 1899 - 1968, New York, New York)

North America, American, born Poland

Weegee, a freelance press photographer whose lurid photos of crime and accident scenes frequently appeared in tabloid newspapers, was the first of his type to be recognized by the art establishment. His amazing ability to arrive on the scene, even before the police arrived, earned him his nickname, a phonetic spelling of Ouija, the children's board game purported to predict the future. Closeness to his subjects is one device Weegee used to make the viewers feel as if they were at the scene.
