Nathan Oliveira

(Oakland, California, 1928 - 2010, Palo Alto, California)

North America, American

An internationally renowned artist, Nathan Oliveira first earned significant attention for paintings of isolated figures shown surrounded by gestural fields of color. Although Oliveira attended drawing sessions with prominent San Francisco Bay Area painters, including Richard Diebenkorn, he was a generation younger and saw his interests more closely aligned with European art. The artist, who retained his early awe of Rembrandt throughout his life, studied with Max Beckmann at Mills College in the summer of 1950 and cited Francis Bacon and Alberto Giacometti as influences. Oliveira received his Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from Mills College, taught at Stanford University from 1964 until his retirement in 1995, and has work represented in the collections of major museums throughout the country.
