Édouard Boubat

Boubat studied typography and graphic arts at the Ecole Estienne in Paris, and began taking photographs after World War II. His lifestyle as a photojournalist gave him a certain freedom not readily available to most people in post-war Europe. Travelling took him all over the world, where he photographed for journals as well as for himself. For Boubat, taking photographs was a way to try to help people to “feel better,” and he said once: "because I know the horror [of war], I don't want to add to it....After the war, we felt the need to celebrate life, and for me photography was the means to achieve this." Boubat frequently photographed lovers in public, children and small joyous and uplifting moments.
Boubat has been awarded several professional awards such as the National Photographic Prize of France and The Hasselblad Foundation Prize both in 1988.
