Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson is one of Ohio’s best known contemporary artists and the state’s only MacArthur “genius” fellow in the visual arts. The Akron Art Museum gave Robinson her first solo museum exhibition in 1986; it was organized by the institution’s curator Barbara Tannenbaum.
Robinson, an African-American, was given the name Aminah (daughter of Allah, creativity and honesty) by a priest in Egypt in 1979. After returning to the U.S., this Columbus, Ohio resident legally adopted the name and has been known by it ever since.
