Number 2 from Africa Suite dates from 1970, the year that the artist began devoting considerable time and energy to lithography. Motherwell adapted the expressive, spontanaeous approach that he had developed during three decades of painting and applied it to his printmaking. The hallmarks of his style can be seen here in Number 2 from Africa Suite, very personal, intuitively derived forms, rendered in a limited palette.
